AN EXTRAVAGANT NEW YEAR BHONU @ SODA BOTTLE OPENER WALA, BANGALORE | A REVIEW
Sunday Funday is meant to relax and recharge. And that's how I spent my Sunday last week. I have always wanted to try the Parsi food and headed to Soda Bottle Opener Wala in Lavelle Road with a bunch of my friends to enjoy an extravagant new year bhonu and it turned out to be one of the best Sunday's. Yes, we all indulged in the exotic Navroze Delights. The menu is very well curated with some lip-smacking delicacies which are traditionally a part of Parsi's New Year celebrations.
As you plunge into Lavelle Road, Bangalore, there are so many options to choose to eat, but ignore all of them and head to this Irani Cafe Soda Bottle Opener Wala, am sure you will switch on your repeat mode henceforth. I have to mention the sensational aroma which hit me as I entered into this place and stirred up my hunger.
The ambience of this Irani cafe oozes a very old world charm with black and white checked tile flooring, portraits of Parsi's on the wall, wooden tables well laid with red chequered table-cloth, candy jars, cycle with milk cans, old style electric switches, bottle lights which adds to that quirk ambience, a juke box in the corner playing some good old songs which made us feel to sit there forever. I totally fell in love with this old-styled yet quirky ambience.
Being a first timer to SBOW, i was quite excited to try out the Navroze delicacies. The food served in the new year bhonu boasts of an array of dishes exclusive to the Parsi's and its presented in its most authentic form. The veg meal is priced at Rs.600++ and non-veg meal is priced at Rs.700++ which is totally worth it for the yummy varieties they are offering.
The Non-Veg meal came in a huge thali which had all the varieties sure to drive the meat-eaters crazy. Started with Gajar Mewa Nu Aachar, a sweet and spicy carrot preparation, Russian Salad, Chicken Pattice, a deep fried goodness. They say that for Parsi's fish is a symbol of good luck and prosperity and the bhonu had a huge fried Mackerel which made the sea food lovers go gagaa.
For the rice eaters there is Mutton Masala Pulav, a heart-warming combination of mutton and spices in fragrant rice. The rotli's went amazingly well with the Masala Di Daal and Jardaloo Ma Marghi, a chicken curry with dried apricots which gives that Persian touch and a sweet addition to the mildy spiced dish. We finished the grand thali with a glass of falooda.
The veggies also loved their meals, it had the Saria, Gajar Mewa Nu Aachar, Russian Salad, Vegetable Cutlet, Tarela Bheeda, Patra Ni Paneer, a steamed paneer preparation wrapped in banana leaves and steam cooked. Masala Di Daal, Vegetable Pulav and Falooda.
The Crumb Stash's Verdict and Rating:
Overall, both the Veg and Non-Veg Bhonu was yummilicious and splendid. Thank you Soda Bottle Opener Wala for making my Sunday a memorable one with the traditional new year bhonu and making us experience the best of Irani culture. So all you mighty foodies, come and unwind at this iconic Irani cafe after a long day at work or rejuvenate yourselves with this grand thali for lunch. It's on till 1st April, 2018.
My overall rating for SBOW would be a 5/5 based on the quality, ambience, taste and service.
